"Synthetic transparency" -- 1984 all over again?

Debbie Weil wonders aloud about "Synthetic transparency".

Yeah, it sounds very Orwellian. But how different is it from the standard advice of working to get a conversational, personal tone in your writing?

Is that deceptive? Manipulative?

It's just plain smart marketing to use the right "voice" for your audience.
